Artist Statement

Unit 2

As an artist, I create video works featuring handmade sculptural props and costumes. I embody fictional characters through performance, costume, makeup and editing; speaking to the landscape of Brechtian theatre and cosplay. The DIY elements of my practice seek to inspire a playful and satirical reading of my work. My mischievous scripts and my contrastingly contemplative poetry are joined as the basis for my video pieces. I demonstrate vulnerability through the exposure of my image and my voice when traversing the disturbing, yet seductive landscapes of European mythical motifs and Shakespearean narratives, utilising metaphors taken from these narratives to help examine such contemporary concerns as humanity’s current relationship with artificial intelligence.

My most recent work highlights the absurdities of our communication with artificial intelligence through the incorporation of Chat GPT verse into the scripting of the piece. This is set against the context of my own poetry and the epic language within Shakespeare’s The Tempest. My practice brings together the comic, the alarming and the ethereal; through collaging research, writing and visuals as methodological practice. This collaging process can be seen through my creation of a hybridised being in this work, represented by layered footage of myself performing in costume, Stable Diffusion AI generation with my footage as its guide and edited footage of animals and landscapes. The work is influenced by cyberfeminist theory, and aims to explore the complex power imbalances between patriarchy and the feminine, as well as between human beings and artificial intelligence.
